The rural community of Lone Tree formed north of Lone Tree Lake. The lake was named for a single large cottonwood tree. The Lone Tree Post Office was established in 1869 with postmaster Ferdinand Hartwick. The post office was initially located in a store that later became the Lone Tree Hotel. The post office lasted until 1905, when its mail was diverted to Morgan, MN. Lone Tree had a small number of buildings, including a schoolhouse, a church, a creamery, and a livery stable.
